This Counselor is administratively responsible to the Dean of Student Services regarding sources of student success and all the day-to-day activities associated with student success. This includes management of the technical requirements, transmission of data, assisting students with student success matters and supervision of staff. The Counselor will work in conjunction with the other counseling staff to provide information to students regarding careers, transfer, program planning and financial aid processes and enhance retention. Additionally, this position will work closely with the Career and Transfer Resource Center, the Tutoring Center and Student Activities. This position will coordinate workshops for students, faculty, staff and community patrons regarding these initiatives and teach College Success Skills classes. |
| FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: |

1. Responsible for developing, planning and implementing comprehensive student success programs to enhance student development through guidance, tracking and consciousness raising by promoting students’ academic, social and multicultural development.
2. Responsible for providing educational, career and personal counseling for potential, current and returning students of Tidewater Community College.
3. Consult with faculty and other administrative personnel at Tidewater Community College regarding student performance and curriculum concerns to improve student retention and academic success through personal contacts, phone conversations, written correspondence, and committee involvement.
4. Provide opportunities that enhance student development through promoting academic success, social and multicultural interaction using appropriate counseling intervention strategies that assist students in realizing potential personal growth.
5. Serve as advocate and liaison between student and faculty.
6. Responsible for coordinating, facilitating and presenting workshops and information sessions relating to methods of student success on campus and in the community.
7. Responsible for interpreting and implementing federal, state, VCCS, college and campus regulations and guidelines.
8. Teach student development courses, to include information on general college information, academic planning, test taking, time management, study strategies, career planning, and student rights and responsibilities in order to assist students in a successful transition to college.
9. Acquire knowledge and ideas that enhance job performance and improve delivery of services through attending staff meeting and conferences, professional meetings and by reading journals and publications.
10. Interpret English and Math placement test scores for the purpose of determining appropriate classes for students by utilizing all testing materials.
11. Conduct information sessions for new applicants for the purpose of orienting individuals to college programs, policies, and registration procedures by utilizing printed materials, lecture materials and guest speakers.
12. Counsel students who have requested readmission to assist them in developing appropriate educational goals, time management plans, study skills, and decision making skills that will assist them in realizing academic success.
13. Review student’s registration worksheet to ensure student has met prerequisites and determine if student is enrolling in courses appropriate to his/her declared program. Verify information provided on the registration worksheet by interviewing the student.
14. Review potential, current, returning student’s transcripts in order to assist in student’s decisions regarding placement and completion of graduation requirements using curriculum audit forms and college assessment of transfer, military records, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) documentation, and experiential learning credits.
15. Serve as a representative of Tidewater Community College when working closely with the community through schools, civic organization meetings, public agencies and college fairs.
16. Provide on-line information and services to students and the public.
17. Supervise assigned staff.
18. Other duties and tasks as assigned.

| REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: |

1. Demonstrated knowledge in student personnel and or best practices in counseling principles and advising, especially as applied to higher education.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of human dynamics and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse population. Ability to develop and implement programs relating to multicultural issues, disabilities and career management.
3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience or training in developing and implementing retention strategies for student success.
4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to relate to students, faculty, staff, administrators and the community.
6. Ability to train and direct personnel, student workers and volunteers to perform their duties in an accurate, effective and courteous manner.
7. Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
8. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of local, state and federal policies as they relate to higher education.
9. Demonstrated skills in problem research and resolution.
10. Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, or other related appropriate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

1. Demonstrated computer competency in a student information system, email, Microsoft Office, Windows, database system.
2. Demonstrated skills in developing, implementing and evaluating programs and services.
3. Demonstrated understanding of and belief in the comprehensive mission of community colleges.
