SUMMARY:
  The professional librarian is responsible for providing instruction and assistance to faculty, staff, and students in accessing and using library information resources, including electronic databases, the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), Internet tools, printed materials, and media.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provides client services to students, faculty, staff, and community in using printed materials and electronic information resources, in order to enhance client access to resources by: a) explaining use of automated library system(s) and use of printed and electronic information resources; b) teaching bibliographic instruction/information literacy programs including individualized instructions, tours, general orientation sessions, subject/course related classes; c) creating pathfinders, bibliographies, worksheets, instructional guides, handbooks, manuals, and promotional materials using word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; d) planning, coordinating, and promoting the library instructional programs by formulating and carrying out short and long term goals for these programs through interactions with library management, staff, and instructors; and e) devising research strategies for different situations.

2. Participates in collection management by: a) evaluating the collection and recommending titles for purchase and weeding; b) making recommendations for coordinated college purchases (standing orders, periodicals, etc.); c) working with focus/working groups in collection management decisions and creating/implementing collection development policies; and d) reading professional journals.

3. Works closely with faculty on incorporating LRC resources in teaching materials by: a) assessing library needs of individual academic divisions and departments through written and oral communication; b) advising and teaching college faculty on LRC’s offerings so the college LRC’s meet the needs of individual curricula; and c) sharing divisional and departmental needs with library staff.

4. As needed, may serve clientele at circulation desk in order to lend collection resources to clientele. Work may include all aspects of the circulation function (borrowers’ cards), loaning materials, dispatching intercampus loans, updating patron records, billing, etc.

5. Works on special projects providing analyses and reports as requested. Assists with interlibrary loans using electronic tools such as OCLC and ARIEL, and complies with copyright law and resource sharing agreements. Active participant in library planning and assessment activities and stays current on research technologies by keeping up with professional literature and attending professional library association meetings.

6. Miscellaneous duties include: a) serving on college and state committees; b) assisting in the training, supervision, and evaluation of full-time classified, part-time wage staff and student workers; c) assisting staff with a variety of written assignments; d) collecting statistics in preparing reports; e) working day, evening and/or weekends shifts as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Knowledge of academic library research methods. Knowledge of library information resources including electronic, databases, print, and media. Knowledge of the reference interview process. Knowledge of and the ability to effectively use computers and computer software including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, Internet tools, and electronic mail. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to prepare and conduct bibliographic instruction classes and to assist patrons with information searches using electronic and print resources. Ability to deal with diverse populations to include students, faculty, administrators and community. Ability to devise research strategies and to prepare subject guides, worksheets, bibliographies, handbooks, and other materials to support the information needs of faculty and students. Ability to assist and/or supervise other staff in the day-to-day operation and management of a Learning Resources Center. Ability to employ systematic planning and effective time management techniques. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited graduate program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Experience providing reference assistance with electronic and print resources in an academic library. Teaching skills and experience in information literacy instruction. Experience with digital media production.
