The Director of Threat Assessment and Staff Psychologist is a clinically trained professional who provides professional expertise and leadership to the college’s Threat Assessment Team and assists in operational assessment and intervention with individuals whose behavior poses a threat to the safety of the college community. As the college’s senior professional with highly specialized training and experience, the Director provides consultative services to other college managers, supervisors, and the licensed professional counselors located on each campus. The Director develops and implements a plan for communications, outreach, and education to foster the college’s efforts in violence prevention. The Director also serves as the college’s Workplace Harassment Prevention Coordinator. The Director of Threat Assessment and Staff Psychologist reports to the Executive Vice President. |
| FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: |

1. Convenes and serves as chair of the college’s Threat Assessment Team (TAT).
2. Provides subject matter expertise to the President’s Executive Staff in its function as the committee charged by the Code of Virginia (§ 23-9.2:10(B)) with oversight responsibility for education and prevention of violence at the college.
3. Working with the respective campus dean of student services, provides professional oversight of the campus-based licensed professional counselors, assuring employment of appropriate protocols for screening and referring subjects who appear in need of mental health intervention and documentation thereof across the college.
4. Serves as the threat assessment/management case manager for the college, collaborating with the campus case managers (licensed professional counselors) and other campus and college-wide managers.
5. Provides threat & risk assessment in potentially violent situations; assesses likelihood of subject’s danger to self or others; coordinates with college-wide and campus managers, law-enforcement agencies, community services boards, and families to carry out emergency interventions or other types of crisis response and integrated case management approaches.
6. Coordinates, reviews, and evaluates clinical and forensic assessments of subjects, makes recommendations for interventions, and monitors compliance with recommended treatment.
7. Responds to, assesses, and triages information from members of the college community concerned about actual or potential incidents of violence.
8. Provides information and referrals to appropriate law-enforcement agencies, student services, human resources, and other college areas, as needed.
9. Coordinates the development of threat assessment and violence prevention procedures, protocols, and resources for the assessment of potentially violent individuals and appropriate interventions or actions to resolve the potential threat.
10. Serves as a resource to the campus-based licensed professional counselors and to other college-wide and campus administrators and offices.
11. Coordinates the provision of victim/witness assistance services to increase the comfort and cooperation level.
12. Oversees the design, development, operation, and assessment of a 24-hour threat response system.
13. In coordination with other college-wide and campus administrators and offices, develops and implements a plan for communications, outreach, and education for the prevention of violence across the college.
14. Trains and consults with staff from Human Resources, Safety & Security, and Student Services functional areas, academic administrators and faculty, and other professionals on issues related to threat assessment and management, de-escalation of volatile situations, managing mental health issues in the learning or working environment, and similar topics.
15. Develops and conducts educational programs for the college community on topics related to threat assessment and management, violence prevention, safety planning, crisis intervention, and de-escalation of volatile situations. Provides information and training to faculty, staff, and students about when, how, and to whom individuals exhibiting troubling behavior should be reported.
16. Provides guidance on the development of an information management process that gathers, analyzes, documents, and disseminates sensitive information; manages this process for the TAT.
17. Maintains records, produces reports, and organizes and disseminates TAT case management information.
18. Oversees all workplace harassment matters including, but not limited to, proposing policy and procedures, providing training to employees and students, and investigating and resolving complaints.
19. Meets with the Workplace Harassment Prevention Committee to discuss issues and respond to questions regarding the college’s workplace harassment policy and procedures.
20. Serves on college committees, task forces, and other bodies as appropriate.
21. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Executive Vice President.

| REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: |

1. Working knowledge of threat assessment and threat management theory and practice, and experience in assessment and management of cases involving potential violence, preferably in a higher education environment.
2. Demonstrated ability to review and interpret clinical assessments and formulate interventions to minimize risk of violence, and to provide crisis intervention and response, case management counseling in field/crisis settings and information and referral.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop comprehensive and multi-faceted communications, awareness, and education programs around topics of violence prevention for varied audiences
4. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups to reach acceptable solutions to problems
5. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and respond operationally to issues or situations positing a threat to the safety of the college community.
6. Working knowledge of workplace harassment prevention theory, practice, policy, and legal issues.
7. Experience within a higher education setting working with multi-unit, multi-disciplinary teams.
8. Demonstrated ability to develop and manage projects that involve complex and sensitive issues, knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, and coordination with multiple departments.
9. Doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an accredited program; licensed as an Applied or Clinical Psychologist in Virginia or license-eligible and attain a license within one year of employment. Strong preference will be given to individuals who are currently licensed psychologists in Virginia.
