TITLE:
Adult Career Coach
CAMPUS: Chesapeake
SUMMARY:
  Tidewater Community College invites applications for two new full-time, grant-funded positions. The Adult Career Coach at Tidewater Community College is responsible for working with adult participants enrolled in select allied health and other career and technical training programs to develop individual career and education plans, secure college or training program admissions and financial aid, and acquire needed support services through human services agencies and community-based organizations. The adult career coach educates clients about programs and services available at the college and assists clients in designing individualized education and career plans that include strategies for attaining necessary support services. The adult career coach works closely with the job placement coordinator to assist students in preparing for employment. The career coach communicates with faculty to maintain awareness of student academic progress and with student support services and external agencies to ensure that students have the services needed to complete select training and attain a credential. Co-located at two TCC campuses, this position is funded by a three year grant from the US Department of Labor.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assess the skills, needs, interests, and aptitudes of clients and provide personalized advice on career and postsecondary program and career options.
2. Develop individual action plans for students using strong interpersonal skills that engage, support, and motivate students.
3. Assist students with the financial aid process using links to financial aid services and financial aid staff at TCC.
4. Network with state and local support services and assist students with access to these resources.
5. Provide well written reports to the college and the VCCS, using appropriate data, as requested.
6. Facilitate equitable resolutions to student issues with efficiency and exceptional problem solving skills.
7. Collaborate with appropriate deans to determine availability of health career programs and other identified career and technical programs.
8. Collaborate with the One Stop System and Virginia Employment Commission to ensure connections with adult students who meet the criteria to access grant services.
9. Use state and regional labor market trends and opportunities to assist students in their choice of careers.
10. In collaboration with the job placement coordinator, incorporate specific needs of area employers into the career counseling with students.
11. Build networks and obtain cooperation from a variety of groups, including business and industry and entities operating within Virginia’s Workforce Network.
12. In cooperation with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, access a variety of data necessary for reports.
13. Work collaboratively with student services professionals, to ensure that students are accurately advised as to course and program requirements.
14. Communicate regularly with faculty to maintain awareness of student success.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Master’s degree in counseling, adult education, or other related degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
2. Demonstrated ability to advise or counsel adult students leading to academic success.
3. Ability to collaborate with student services professionals on each campus to ensure that students receive appropriate support services.
4. Proven ability to work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting a positive attitude and sense of humor.
5. Ability to make oral and written presentations, to organize and analyze, to negotiate and communicate effectively while establishing cooperative working relationships with a diverse array of individuals contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
6. Ability to interpret college policies and procedures; ability to resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
7. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the comprehensive mission of the community colleges.
8. Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office.
9. Ability to work days, evenings, and or weekends, as needed, and provide transportation between campuses and throughout the community.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience working at a community college or other institution of higher education.
2. Experience in career counseling.
3. Knowledge of marketing techniques necessary to promote adult career coach services to campus students and the community.
4. Proficiency in social media.
HOURS:
  Varies.
SALARY:
  The College offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package. FUNDING STATUS: This is a grant-funded position.
