The Director of Alumni Relations (Director) will provide leadership/vision for the strategic and operational aspects of the college’s alumni relations program that is in its infancy. Serving as an ambassador to an alumni base of over 100,000 and the larger community, the Director must be a strategic planner and communicator capable of working with the association’s board of directors and college officials to successfully grow the organization and expand its programs in ways that reflect the diversity and the mission of the institution, as well as support TCC’s Educational Foundation’s mission of annual gift appeals. This position reports to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. |
| FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: |
| |
1. Provide overall management and leadership for the operational area of alumni relations.
2. In coordination with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, establish clear goals and objectives for the college’s alumni program, including:
a. develop benchmarks to chart alumni engagement and analyze effectiveness;
b. utilize research to guide the direction of the program; and
c. develop, maintain, and implement an Alumni Relations Plan that expands the number of engaged alumni through events, mass communications, volunteer and board service, interpersonal communications, etc.
3. Track all activities with membership through a database, and work closely with the Development Office to expand constituent profiles ensuring integrity of data.
4. Develop strategies for engaging and educating current students (future alumni) and alumni about the existence of the association and the benefits of engagement and stewardship, including:
a. develop an alumni benefits package/membership incentives;
b. represent the association to student organizations/clubs and leaders;
c. participate in commencements and major student activities;
d. represent the association to the college administration, faculty and staff; and
e. represent the association to all alumni.
5. Plan and execute an annual slate of alumni events, including but not limited to:
a. social and professional networking events;
b. mentorship and student outreach events;
c. community outreach events;
d. college/association promotional events; and
6. Work closely with the Development Department to cultivate non-giving alumni into donor prospects, including participation in annual giving appeal; and cultivate donors into engaged alumni.
7. Work closely with and support the Tidewater Community College Alumni Association Board of Directors (Board), including:
a. serve as TCC staff liaison to the Board and all its committees;
b. understand organizational structure and by-laws;
c. prepare for and provide administrative support for all Board meetings; and
d. advocate for the Board and its mission to the college.
8. Develop communications strategies to expand alumni engagement through email, social media, and hard mail, when appropriate.
9. Develop outlets in support of diverse alumni interests including but not limited to opportunities for student mentorship, personal professional/career advancement, and volunteer service.
10. Identify distinguished alumni and track their engagement; cultivate Board prospects; make recommendations to college officials for commencement speakers or special features on alumni (magazine, website, etc.); and develop and implement a program targeting distinguished alumni.
11. Develop organizational strategies in support of financial self-sustainability, ultimately reducing the percentage of support from the college.
12. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

| REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: |

1. Demonstrated strategic planning and leadership skills with proven ability to grow a college or university alumni program from infancy to a comprehensive initiative.
2. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of alumni engagement and strategic and operational best practices, including financial, and experience implementing them.
3. Demonstrated ability to cultivate strong relationships among diverse constituents and balance and satisfy diverse interests through communications and programming.
4. Demonstrated understanding of the relationship between alumni affinity for the institution and giving habits and experience connecting them.
5. Excellent and persuasive communication skills, both verbal and written.
6. Experience managing teams and working with volunteers.
7. Experience working with a board of directors, by-laws, and budgets.
8. Knowledge of and experience in planning major events and associated best practices with close attention to detail.
9. Proficiency manipulating donor management software, such as Raiser’s Edge.
10. Demonstrated understanding of and belief in the comprehensive mission of the community college.
11. A master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
12. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
