Veterans Services Coordinator
CAMPUS: Center for Military and Veterans Education, located on the Virginia Beach Campus
SUMMARY:
  As a member of the Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE), located at Tidewater Community College (TCC) Virginia Beach Campus, the Veterans Services Coordinator provides College-wide supervision, in support of the Director of Military Student Support Services, to include oversight of the four campuses’ Veterans Affairs offices and staff. Responsibilities range from coordination to program supervision, involving responsibilities such as training, certification, planning, coordinating, implementing, supervising staff, and the evaluation of programs and services. The Veterans Affairs offices are responsible for the application, advising, referral, and certification of veterans’ education benefits and quality services to military-related students (defined as active duty, reserves, guard, veterans and their family members, and military associated civil service) in a responsive, timely, and compassionate manner. This position will also advise military-related students on the application and use of veterans’ education benefits. The position will be responsible for the training and certification in the areas of veterans’ education benefits for all of CMVE advisors, counselors, support staff and provide workshops to TCC students, faculty and staff.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  The Veterans Services Coordinator will:
1. Manage the college-wide Veterans Affairs support program processes which certify eligibility of military-related students and Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program participants for educational assistance including; determination of eligibility for benefits, registration processes, course selection criteria and sequence to obtain maximum allowable benefits. Advise students continued eligibility to attend college using varying benefits programs provided by the federal and state government; to include the provision of supplemental funding in the supervision, administration, and training of the Veterans Affairs Work Study Student participants.
2. Collaboration with college faculty, staff, veteran’s organizations, and other agencies to provide employment assistance to military-related students.
3. Represent the CMVE in meetings on advising, counseling, and student services programs.
4. Work collaboratively with CMVE staff and other college departments to enroll and track military-related students.
5. Participate in information sessions for military-related students to inform them of college academic programs and veterans’ services.
6. Conduct quarterly academic and student record audits to ensure timely submission of required reports to the Veterans Administration and scheduled compliance visits by the State Approving Agency (SAA).
7. Provide regular input to support, advise, and counsel military-related students through the college’s military website and internal media.
8. In collaboration with CMVE Staff and other college departments, develop materials for and provide information on CMVE programs and services to military-related students.
9. Serves as a liaison for veterans affairs with academic division chairpersons, academic advisors, and administrative personnel; provide assistance in resolving problems in relation to military-related student issues.
10. Troubleshoot problems as they relate to military-related student records, registration, and payment, working with appropriate college and campus staff to provide conflict resolution.
11. Refer military-related students, when appropriate, to community agencies and other college resources (e.g. Women’s Center, Educational Accessibility Resources Student or Employment Services, and financial counseling).
12. Acquire current knowledge and ideas that enhance job performance and improve delivery of services by attending conferences, professional seminars, staff meetings, and by reading journals and publications.
13. Prepare advisement and counseling reports and matrix information for the advising and counseling of military-related students as directed by the Director of Military Student Support Services.
14. Supervise, train, and promote staff involvement to maximize performance and inspire staff to self-improvement, to include:
a. Ensure expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the department or unit.
b. Provide staff with frequent, constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate and ensure staff has the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals.
c. Ensure all requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation and any performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur.
d. Review and effectively communicate safety related issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absences.
15. Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of Military Student Support Services. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor of the state of Virginia.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Candidates must have a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in functions as delineated above, preferably in a community college setting.
3. Knowledge of State and Federal Department of Education, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Regulations including active duty Military Tuition Assistance.
4. Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures, especially as they relate to Department of Veterans Affairs Education Benefits.
5. Provide timely input with regard to updates/modifications to the college catalog, website, veterans working calendar and policy manual.
6. Experience in conflict resolution and the application of mediation techniques as they relate to the Veterans Affairs Office in assisting military-related students in their transition to higher education and throughout their enrollment at TCC.
7. Experience in researching and resolving questions and issues, and the application of sound decision-making ability relating to all facets of each chapter under the G.I. Bill, tuition assistance, MYCAA and the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program participants.
8. Experience in interpreting and applying Department of Veterans Affairs policies and procedures with accuracy and completeness.
9. Demonstrated knowledge of military education initiatives and higher education’s role in providing post-secondary education to military-related students.
10. Demonstrated ability to:
a. Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, effectively, and efficiently.
b. Collaborate on projects across a large, complex organization and with external constituents, including establishing project deadlines and schedules.
c. Work independently as well as effectively in a team setting, frequently within short deadlines.
d. Prepare and deliver oral presentations and written reports in numerous formats.
e. Meet deadlines and complete work requirements with effective problem solving techniques.
f. Articulate the value of community colleges in advancing the educational goals of military-related students.
g. Communicate with internal and external constituencies in a persuasive and professional manner, including articulating the college’s message with clarity and enthusiasm while establishing cooperative working relationships with a diverse array of individuals contacted in the course of the performance of assigned duties.
h. Provide career counseling to students in a higher education setting, experience counseling military-related students preferred.
i. Assist students with personal issues that may impact retention and academic success, preferably to include experience with military-related students.
11. (Same as item C)Experience in the area of supervising staff and development of advising, counseling, and student support services.
12. Experience working in a VA office at community college or university setting and using VA electronic certification and experience as a certifying official designation by the Department of Veterans Affairs or the ability to obtain certification. (preferred)
13. Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills.
14. Ability to interpret and apply VCCS, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and college policies and procedures as they relate to student services and faculty support.
15. Knowledge of college programs and support services.
16. Demonstrated computer competency in Microsoft Office, Windows, Internet search, and email.
