Tidewater Community College invites applications and nominations to fill a new First-Year Success Coordinator position, located at the Norfolk campus.
The First-Year Success Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating all aspects of the First-Year Success system at the campus level. The coordinator reports to the Campus Dean of Student Services and is also responsible for working with the appropriate individuals in the Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management’s office to ensure that the First-Year Success system remains consistent college-wide, data are continually and uniformly gathered and reported, and the First-Year Success programming is continually assessed to facilitate improvement and revision. |
| FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: |

1. Work with other First-Year Success Coordinators, First-Year Success Managers, and the appropriate individuals in the Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management’s (VP-SSEM) office to ensure college-wide consistency of materials, training, and delivery of the First-Year Success system.
2. Work with other First-Year Success Coordinators, First-Year Success Managers, and the appropriate individuals in the VP-SSEM’s office and in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to continually assess the First-year Success system.
3. Order and maintain supplies, materials, and marketing tools for all aspects of the First-Year Success system.
4. Oversee day-to-day work of the campus Student Success Advisor(s), as needed .
5. Coordinate the campus’s New Student Orientation:
• Oversee hiring, training, and scheduling of Orientation instructors.
• Schedule Orientation sessions.
• Coordinate ongoing assessment of campus Orientation sessions and supply reports as needed to the campus provost, campus dean of student services, and college-wide coordinator.
• Maintain records of Orientation attendance.
6. Coordinate the campus’s Academic Alert program:
• Coordinate Academic Alert training and information sessions for faculty.
• Work with faculty and staff to present the Academic Alert program in Student Development (SDV) and developmental education classes.
• Oversee hiring, training, and scheduling of support staff.
• Serve as campus representative/member of the college’s Academic Alert Team, providing ongoing assessment and improvement of the Academic Alert system on a college-wide basis.
• Maintain accurate records of campus Academic Alert participation and outcomes using SARS software and generate reports as needed.
7. Coordinate the campus’s Family Orientation:
• Coordinate and host fall, spring, and summer family orientation sessions.
• Coordinate ongoing assessment of family orientation programming and supply reports as needed to the campus provost, campus deans of student services, and college-wide coordinator.
• Maintain records of family orientation attendance.
8. Coordinate the campus’s Student Development (SDV) course offerings:
• Coordinate the scheduling of SDV courses (classrooms, instructor scheduling, cancelations, textbook orders, overloads, etc.) with the campus dean of student services.
• Coordinate training for all SDV instructors for the campus, including ensuring that all SDV instructors are properly certified to teach SDV courses.
• Coordinate ongoing assessment of campus SDV courses and supply reports as needed to the campus provost and campus dean of student services.
9. Provide First-Year Success Counseling:
• Assist with developing, planning, and coordinating the academic advising program for first-year students; provide guidance to first-year students in the development of academic plans with the selection of courses and electives to meet program, graduation, and transfer requirements.
• Provide campus faculty professional development focused on First-year Success.
• Ensure comprehensive engagement with faculty and communication about First-year Success programming.
• Prepare and manage a budget for equipment, supplies, and resource materials to assure adequate financial support for the campus’s First-year Success programming.

| REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: |

1. Knowledge of counseling principles, policies, and practices especially as applied to higher education.
2. Ability to work with staff from other campuses and college-wide offices to plan and implement changes or modifications in the First-year Success system.
3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience or training in developing and implementing retention strategies for student success.
4. Demonstrated ability to supervise employees while coordinating work with that of the campus, the college, and VCCS colleagues.
5. Ability to work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting a positive attitude and sense of humor.
6. Ability to make oral and written presentations, to organize and analyze, to negotiate and communicate effectively while establishing cooperative working relationships with a diverse array of individuals contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
7. Ability to interpret college policies and procedures; ability to resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
8. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the comprehensive mission of the community college. Experience working at a community college or other institution of higher education preferred.
9. Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel services, adult learning, higher education, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
