The Counselor is a clinically trained professional who is able to screen and refer troubled students and facilitate appropriate mental health crisis response. He/she provides emotional and behavioral counseling to individuals and group settings and may be called upon to provide academic and career advisement. He/she is a generalist with clinical skills in assessment and intervention methodologies for persons exhibiting a wide range of behavior issues, disorders, and degrees of pathology. The Counselor will have a proven commitment to student success in a college setting with a demonstrated utilization of best practices and application of appropriate student development theory. |
| FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: |

1. Provide confidential individual and group counseling to students in a college setting.
2. Provide brief screening and refer students who appear in need of mental health intervention and facilitate appropriate crisis response.
3. Conduct risk assessment screenings in cases that may pose a risk of harm to campus safety and coordinate with Community Service Boards, law enforcement agencies and families to carry out emergency interventions and other types of crisis response when necessary.
4. In collaboration with the Director of Threat Assessment and Staff Psychologist and licensed professional counselors assigned to other campuses, develop and conduct educational programs for the campus community on topics related to threat assessment and management, violence prevention, safety planning, crisis intervention, and de-escalation of volatile situations.
5. Provide counseling workshops and seminars on a variety of topics, e.g., post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety and stress, disruptive and/or aggressive behavior, suicidal ideation, and work/life/academic balance.
6. Provide counseling services for crisis intervention and mediation including student conduct issues and formal and informal conflict resolution strategies.
7. Using a holistic approach, identify potential and actual inhibitors to student success and develop concrete and measurable intervention strategies.
8. Work collaboratively with academic and student support services faculty and staff to contribute to student success and retention initiatives.
9. Provide academic and career advisement to students, on a not-to-interfere basis with primary responsibilities for personal counseling services.
10. Serve as the threat assessment/management case manager for the campus, collaborating closely with other counselors, the Director of Threat Assessment and Staff Psychologist, the Threat Assessment Team, Provost, and Campus Dean of Student Services.
11. Work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and peers in cases involving a high degree of sensitive and confidential information.
12. Participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive personal counseling program based on best practices and sound counseling theory as it applies to college students.
13. Abide by the Standards of Practice established by the Virginia Board of Counseling as well as established ethical and confidentiality guidelines for the profession; acting within those standards and guidelines, provide reports to faculty, staff, and parents as appropriate during times of crisis; understand and abide by FERPA policies and procedures. |
| REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: |

1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and be a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia at the time of appointment. Licensure must be maintained in good standing throughout the appointment. Preference will be given to those who have three or more years of professional counseling and case management experience.
2. Thorough understanding of counseling in a higher education setting, student development theory, as well as issues facing today’s students.
3. Demonstrated interviewing and observation skills that identify problems with a proven ability to devise and implement appropriate remediation.
4. Strong case management skills and a history of collaboration with mental health service providers and community agencies.
5. Experience serving a college population, providing counseling, consultation, and crisis intervention and response protocol.
6. Current knowledge of threat assessment and threat management theory and practice.
7. Experience in assessment and management of cases involving potential violence and post-traumatic stress preferred.
8. Familiarity with HIPPA, ADA and 504 concerns, and FERPA regulations.
9. Demonstrated work experience with psychological testing and interpretation. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to relate to students, faculty, staff, administrators and the community.
