Developmental Education Manager (Norfolk)

SUMMARY:
  Tidewater Community College invites applications and nominations for a restricted, full-time, faculty administrative position Developmental Education Manager.
The Developmental Education Manager is responsible for assisting the Dean with planning, organizing, and coordinating all aspects of developmental education at the campus level. The coordinator reports to the Dean of Languages, Mathematics, and Sciences on the Norfolk campus. This position collaborates with the appropriate individuals across campuses and in the Office of Student Learning & Academic Services to ensure that developmental education remains consistent college-wide, that students enrolled in developmental education modules/courses are provided consistent advising and access to courses through a comprehensive/coordinated schedule, and faculty are provided professional development based on research of best practices to assist with the effective delivery of developmental education courses.
This position is part of a pilot project. As such, their appointments will be restricted in nature and carry no expectation of future appointment beyond the term of the pilot project.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Work with the Dean, developmental education faculty, Student Learning & Academic Services staff, and the appropriate individuals across campuses and to ensure a strong developmental education program for the campus.
2. Collaborate with the Dean, developmental education faculty, and other appropriate individuals to continually assess the campus developmental education program.
3. Oversee the day-to-day work of the campus Mathematics and English labs, as needed.
4. Manage, supervise, and train campus supplemental instructors for developmental education.
5. Coordinate the development of the campus’s developmental education course schedules:
• Assist the deans with the hiring, training, and scheduling of developmental education instructors.
• Schedule developmental education classes coordinating across developmental disciplines to ensure that students have access to a robust schedule of classes.
6. Coordinate developmental education professional development program for the campus and with colleagues college-wide:
• Research best practices in developmental education pedagogies across disciplines and develop individualized and group sessions to improve teaching and learning for developmental education.
• Provide workshops on integration of technology and differentiated learning into the developmental education classroom.
• Request and analyze developmental education data provided by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and collaborate with faculty on how to improve the program based on these data.
7. Provide assistance for students in MTE and ENF classes:
• Collaborate with the First-Year Success Coordinator in developing, planning, and coordinating an academic support program for first-year developmental education students that coordinates scheduling of SDV classes for developmental education students to enhance improvement of retention of developmental students.
• Work collaboratively with the First-Year Success Coordinator to develop success strategies for first-year students who are in developmental studies classes.
• Provide students guidance on enrolling into the appropriate MTE and ENF modules/courses.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Knowledge of developmental education, principles, and practices, especially as applied to community college education.
2. Ability to collaborate with campus faculty, staff, and college-wide offices to plan and implement changes or modifications in the campus’s developmental education program.
3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience or training in developing and implementing retention strategies for student success.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop, support, and manage learning assistance programs including Mathematics and English labs as needed.
5. Demonstrated ability to conduct research on best practices for developmental education and train faculty in new pedagogies to improve student success of a diverse group of learners that includes differentiated learning and use of technologies.
6. Ability to use data in decision making as it relates to developmental education.
7. Ability to organize and develop a class schedule for developmental studies that meets the needs to the campus’s study body.
8. Ability to work as a team player, appropriately exhibiting a positive attitude and sense of humor.
9. Ability to make oral and written presentations, to organize and analyze, to negotiate and communicate effectively while establishing cooperative working relationships with a diverse array of individuals in the course of performing assigned duties.
10. Ability to interpret college policies and procedures; ability to resolve issues resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
11. Experience teaching English, reading or mathematics, preferably at the high school or community college level.
12. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the comprehensive mission of the community college. Experience working at a community college or other institution of higher education preferred.
13. Master's degree in a related area from an accredited college or university required. Coursework in curriculum and instruction preferred.
