Education Support Specialist III (Veterans Benefits Advisor)
CAMPUS: Virginia Beach (CMVE)
SUMMARY:
  Tidewater Community College seeks candidates for four (4) new Veterans Benefits Advisors. As a member of the Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE), located at the Virginia Beach Campus, each Veterans Benefits Advisor will be located at one of the college’s four campuses. This position will support the Veterans Affairs (VA) offices at TCC in the advising, referral, and certification of veteran education benefits for military-related students in a responsive, timely, and compassionate manner.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  The Veterans Benefits Advisor provides assistance in determination of eligibility for benefits, registration processes, course selection criteria, and sequence to obtain maximum allowable benefits. Determines continued eligibility to attend college under varying benefits programs provided by the federal and state government, to include the supervision, administration, and training of staff.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Knowledge and understanding of the community college mission and the VA office, particularly as it relates to enrollment and support services. Ability to interpret and apply State and Federal Departments of Education, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Virginia Community College System (VCCS) regulations as they pertain to military-related students benefits and educational support. Knowledge of the Department of Defense (DoD) active duty, National Guard, Coast Guard, and reserve veterans benefits and active duty tuition assistance programs. Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures, especially as they relate to VA Education Benefits. Ability to work with minimal supervision and guidance in managing the day to day operations of a student support office. Ability to supervise VA work-study students in the collection, dissemination, and maintenance of information, and in the implementation and execution of processes as they relate to the campus VA Offices. Ability to work effectively on a one-to-one basis with a diverse student population and provide excellent student service. Ability to work effectively as a team within TCC’s VA Offices and student services; engage and interact with administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students and the general public. Ability and skills to meet deadlines and complete work requirements with effective problem solving techniques. Ability to work accurately with details, construct records, make data entries, track curriculum, and safeguard administrative file records as required by the Virginia State Approving Agency, Library of Virginia, and the Veterans Administration. Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills. Experience in conflict resolution and the application of mediation techniques as they relate to military-related students. Knowledge and skills in researching and resolving questions and issues, and the application of sound decision-making relating to the G.I. Bill and the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program participants’ eligibility for benefits. Knowledge of college curricula and programs. Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Personal Non-Public Information (PNPI), and execute policies and procedures as it relates to Veterans Affairs processes. Knowledge of and extensive skills in the operation of a PC, e-mail communications, internet and program specific related software for data entry to include configuring and interpreting databases and spreadsheets for tracking, internet transmission and self-audits.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Prior military experience or family member that has used voluntary education programs and/or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (GI Bill) benefits. Demonstrated understanding of Veterans Affairs online training site, and online VAOnce Certification. Experience working in VA office setting administering education benefits programs using electronic VA certification. Certifying Official designation by the Department of Veterans Affairs or the ability to obtain. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and training that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience.
HOURS:
  8:30AM – 5:00PM.
SALARY:
  Commensurate with qualifications. Position is in Pay Band four. The College offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package.
