TITLE:
Equipment and Repair Technician I (Trucking Lab Mechanic)
CAMPUS: Portsmouth
SUMMARY:
  This position will ensure all lab, skill range, and road equipment are serviceable and ready for daily training in the trucking program.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  The Trucking Lab mechanic will maintain a sufficient inventory of high usage items for unscheduled maintenance to prevent the interruption of training. Coordinates major repairs with the contracted business community. Keeps supervisor informed of budget expenditures. Assists or substitutes for instructors in the trucking program as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Skilled in performing routine and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment including power hand tools, electric diagnostic equipment, skill range, and road tractor/trailer equipment. Skilled in maintaining and repairing truck air brakes and electrical systems. Ability to order supplies, materials, and equipment for program use. Ability to arrange for major repairs of defective equipment which is beyond the capability of the school. Ability to serve as an instructional assistant in the laboratory, on the skill range and road, aid students as required, and keep records of progress. Ability to serve as a lab instructor training students in use of basic maintenance tools and other shop equipment under the supervision of the instructor. Ability to set up equipment for student use or instructor demonstration. Ability to aid instructor in maintaining a safe working environment for students as well as faculty. Ability to assume the duties of teaching faculty members due to absence for meetings, illness, or leave. Post high school training in automotive and diesel mechanics. Commercial driver’s license. Ability to obtain a Virginia State vehicle inspector license within one year.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Experience in the trucking industry and repair. Virginia State vehicle inspector’s license.
HOURS:
  7:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
SALARY:
  Commensurate with qualifications. Position is in Pay Band three. The college offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package.
