Tidewater Community College seeks applications for two (2) new Installation and Repair Technicians. These positions will perform on-site and in-shop inspection, installation, testing, and repair of telecommunications and microcomputer devices and peripheral equipment in support of a multi-vendor, multi-protocol, voice, video, and data network. These positions report directly to the Campus Lead Installation and Repair Technician of either the Chesapeake or Virginia Beach Campus. |
| FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Installation and Repair Technician provides professional, courteous, and timely end user support to the college’s staff, faculty, and students. Accountable for maintaining the security and confidentiality of any proprietary or sensitive information or data in any medium regarding the college or its students, faculty, or staff. Assists in ensuring desktop standardization, and performance. Utilizes diagnostic and data recovery software to install, setup, and configure common application software packages and operating systems (i.e. Microsoft Windows XP/Windows 7 and Macintosh). Assists in performing setup and maintenance of network interface systems (i.e. Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, etc.). Tests wiring, IP telephone equipment, and peripherals for switched and non-switched services (voice, data, and video). Duties include, but are not limited to, interpretation of written requests; coordination of work with customers; installation or repair of requested services; documentation; interaction/communications with Telecom, Network, and Support Specialists regarding such services; providing first level customer support, and completion of appropriate paperwork. In order to perform duties required of this position, this employee requires a LAN account and access to general network services. |
| REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: |
| |
Basic knowledge of personal computers, operating systems, peripheral devices, and desktop computer applications, including Apple OS, Windows 7/XP, and Microsoft Office X2003/2007. Basic knowledge of local area networks, including Telecommunications Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and its application in a large WAN/LAN environment. Basic knowledge of Anti-Virus and Network Security Scanning Software, as well as security policies and procedures for a large WAN/LAN environment. Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computers, operating systems, and peripherals. Strong verbal and written communication skills sufficient to interact with a variety of end users and other technical staff. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of a work assignment and to participate as a member of a cross-departmental project team. Ability to work under pressure; meet inflexible deadlines; deal with difficult situations while maintaining composure, handle multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting day-to-day work needs. Ability to install, configure, and troubleshoot Microsoft Office 2003/2007, and other software in a LAN environment. Experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing IBM compatible computer equipment, operating systems, and peripheral devices. A+ certification or equivalent experience. |
| PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: |
| |
Ability to configure and employ LAN management, performance, and evaluation tools such as Altiris Management Suite to evaluate network performance in a complex, multi-campus WAN/LAN environment. Ability to install, configure, and support electronic messaging applications and clients for a large campus. Ability to work independently or as a member of a team without direct supervision. Working knowledge of the concepts of Voice Over IP for Ethernet networks. Microsoft Certified Professional or equivalent experience. Network+ certification or equivalent experience. |
