TITLE:
Information Technology Specialist I (Telecommunications Support Specialist)
CAMPUS: District Administration
SUMMARY:
  This position will assist in the implementation and maintenance of network architectures, including LANs/WLANs/WANs, LAN internetworking, and connections with the WAN environment on the college’s four campuses and several branch offices.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  The Telecommunications Support Specialist’s duties and responsibilities include assisting in the identification of hardware and software technical problems and malfunctions related to LANs/WANs, routers, switches, wireless and other related peripherals/devices. Additionally, the technician assists with throughput analysis, problem solving, and infrastructure planning, and locating necessary tools and processes to identify troublesome trends as they develop. The technician also participates in various IT projects intended to continually improve/upgrade the telecommunications infrastructure’s ability to support voice, video and data; employee accomplishes daily responsibilities via access to a LAN account, access to general network services, and retains administrator rights to designated college computers, in support of information technology applications and infrastructure(s).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Basic knowledge of telecommunication standards and configurations for integrated voice, video and data. Basic knowledge of industry standards, protocols, and hardware, including T1, ISDN, DS3, DLS, switches, routers, wireless components, high speed and switched networking technologies and intelligent network devices (i.e. Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Ability to assist the installation and troubleshoot telecommunications and network hardware and software including routers, switches, and wireless systems. Ability to conduct technical research, analyze telecommunications and networking problems, and develop optimum solutions. Ability to evaluate the products and services of network and telecommunications services, systems, and equipment. Ability to provide first level technical support for network and telecommunication problems and issues for LAN/WANs that have been escalated beyond the capability of the campus technical support staff. Ability to use desktop computers using Windows 2K/XP/7 operating systems and Microsoft Office IX/20XX or Corel Office software packages. Ability to assist in the development and maintenance of a procedural manual for the operation and support of telecommunications. Ability to communicate effectively and work with diverse groups of employees, staff and faculty. A+ Certification or equivalent experience. Formal training related to electronic technology or the installation and repair of telecommunications hardware and peripheral devices or equivalent experience. Experience installing and troubleshooting routers, Ethernet switches, wireless components, network links, interfaces, and cabling. Training on the installation and maintenance of lines for delivery of voice/data/video communications or advanced experience. Experience or training in the development, operation, and maintenance of LAN/WANs using network protocols and standards.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Knowledge of Windows Server 2000 or greater. Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 7 or greater. Knowledge of Linux/Unix operating systems. Novell, Microsoft, Cisco, or other major networking vendor’s TCP/IP and Networking Technology authorized training. Experience in the installation, maintenance and testing of fiber optic cables and connection boxes. Associates degree in a technology field or equivalent experience.
HOURS:
  Rotating Shifts: 8:30AM to 5:00PM and 7:30AM to 4:00PM.
SALARY:
  Commensurate with qualifications. Position is in Pay Band four. The college offers a competitive salary and an excellent comprehensive benefits package.
